Amphitheatre at Ancient Aptera "Adopted"
On Sunday we visited the amphitheatre at ancient Aptera for a very special occasion.
The 2nd Gymnasio (Senior school) of Hania and the Gymnasio of Vamos took part in a dual celebration
The 2nd Gymnasio of Hania have received an award for the making of a documentary about Aptera and the Vamos school have "Adopted" the amphitheatre.
we were lucky enough to catch a rehearsal before the main event
The event started with the usual speeches and the awards being given in the monastery area of the site. The Mayors of Chania, Apokoronas and Platanias were there pledging their support as well as a representative of the Periferia and a delegation from DIAZOΜΑ
Students from Vamos school acted as guides around the site with a lot of information
We then followed the musicians down to the amphitheatre for the second part of the ceremony
Two of the students from Vamos made a promise on behalf of them all to look after the site as parents and keep it nurtured and protected
The "tinies" in the front know all the words of the songs and joined in with gusto
It was a glorious day and we all left having experienced something very special
